The Scents of February

The Scents of February

The longest month of the year is over, and the groundhog didn’t see his shadow, which means early Spring for all! Before Spring embraces us with warm sunshine, February is still here and longer since it is a leap year. February smells like new romance, forever love, self-love, solitude, roses, red, pink, candles, incense, chocolate, coffee, being showered with forehead kisses and whispering sweet nothings.

How are cities embracing scents to entice people? Over the holiday season, New York City piped out Nest’s signature holiday scent over a section of 50 tree displays lining Fifth Avenue. State-of-the-art cold mist aroma diffusers up and down Firth Ave filled the air with the luxe scent. What a great marketing idea from Nest! Millions of people will remember the smell and may be enticed to buy from them.

Let’s explore some February scents many will encounter, even if you are not walking along Fifth Ave.

Blooms. Starting with the apparent scent of February, roses and blooms. You cannot get away from flowers this time of the year. Every grocery store is filled with roses and blooms, hoping to capture shoppers’ eyes. Many urban downtowns will have plenty of fresh flower markets open daily. Think outside the box and opt for some beautiful orchids. Plus, orchids will bloom again if taken care of properly.

Aromatherapy. Candles and incense always make the mood suitable for February. Many stores and online shopping ads will be popping up with candles. Candles that smell like vanilla, raspberries, strawberries, pink champagne and, of course, roses are ubiquitous for February. However, many may prefer a sultry, more exotic smell for February, like neroli, orange blossom, sage, lavender, bergamot, birch, amber, sweet patchouli and black leather.

Colors. Though you cannot smell colors, many associate colors and scents that remind them of those colors, and most stores know that. Red and pink are the most traditional February colors seen everywhere this month. Typically associated with strawberries and candied hearts. Red is known to make hearts flutter, so anything spicey is associated with red. Cinnamon also comes to mind with red with its vital energy and passion. Pink brings in more of a friendly love, caring and glamorous feeling, so scents of flowers such as primrose, sweet peas, Himalayan Pink salt and juicy pink watermelon tend to come to mind with pink. Purple is also associated with February since amethyst is February’s birthstone. Purple brings a sense of wisdom and influence, making it a popular color. Bath sets incorporate purple with French lavender, lilac and violet scents. Embrace these colors and scents to bring in more passion and fun for February.

Refreshments. Chocolate-covered strawberries, raspberries, and effervescent pink champagne are always associated with February. Fondue dinners are romantic February foods many will enjoy this month, and delicate red wines are best paired with dark chocolate. Coffee is another February scent that fills the streets since many are still very much in winter (despite what any groundhog says). Stores are filled with baked goodies such as red velvet cakes and cheesecakes. White chocolate raspberry cheesecakes entice those who normally wouldn’t eat cheesecake to say yes!

Love. February is the love month. But it does not mean to go into a deep depression if you are single this month. Love is more than just a couple. Love is everywhere, and when leading with love, life gets much better. Self-love should always be a priority. Incorporate more self-care and self-love days with some of the month’s scents. If you are struggling, sit in solitude and focus on gratitude while deep breathing in some of the scents of February with aromatherapy. If you are in a relationship, enjoy that magical cosmic soul-touching and all the scents of February together.

So, keep positive and remember to stop and smell the roses!
