Spring is in full bloom in most parts of the country, which might bring on spring allergies for many. Don’t add to them with toxins inside your home and body. Let’s explore some spring cleaning to do for your health inside and out.
Making minor changes at first will add to significant changes over time. Start slow and steady to make these spring cleanings last a lifetime. Start by drinking more water. Aiming for at least 80 ounces of filtered water a day is recommended. Begin your morning with lemon water and a pinch of salt to help kick-start digestion. Speaking of water, when the April showers start to pop up, use a rainwater system to save water and reuse it to water outside plants and more.
Swap out toxic household products for non-toxic alternatives. Unfortunately, our favorite conventionally scented candles and plug-ins are dangerous for indoor air quality. Look at the ingredients, such as wax, before purchasing the candles. Most are made with paraffin wax, which is derived from petroleum. Then, the synthetic fragrances are also made with petroleum, and when burned, they emit toluene and benzene, which are known to cause cancer. Instead, look for soy or beeswax candles. Both produce less soot and do not trigger allergies. Plug-ins cause harmful smog inside homes and generate formaldehyde, creating respiratory problems. Switch to using the oven or stove to create an aromatic smell. Simmer pots with fresh herbs and citrus fruits can make the house smell fantastic!
If it’s possible and safe where you live, open the windows and doors for 10 minutes each day to welcome in fresh spring air. This improves the air quality. Aim for the mornings, and before grabbing your smart devices, get morning sunlight the first half hour of waking. This improves mental health and sustainability for the day. Wash windows and doors to have a clean view of the outdoors. Use a homemade recipe for a window washer with white vinegar or lemon juice, dish soap and warm water. Essential oils such as lavender, rosemary, and mint are an excellent addition. Most rodents and pests do not like the smell of mint. Win, win!
Foster a new spring hobby, such as gardening, or begin planning a new project for mental health stimulation. Cross out old deadlines or things on your calendar that are causing stress, dragging you down, or simply making you too busy. Go for alternatives that bring joy and positivity to the body, mind, and soul. Nature walks in the spring are exquisite as the earth begins to wake up and blossom its gorgeous blooms. Bring some fresh-cut spring flowers inside to brighten up your space.
Finally, Spring is an excellent time to update and review your renter’s insurance policy. Spring is also an auspicious time for moving. Remember that ResidentShield does not transfer to roommates, so if you are moving out, you will need to cancel your policy, and your roommate will need to purchase their own policy. ResidentShield transfers within the same community, so update your address as soon as possible. If you are moving to a new community, cancel the current policy and begin a new policy at your new location.
Enjoy all the benefits of spring’s new beginnings and your new spring cleaning routine. Take the time to stop and listen to the birds and soak up as much sunshine as possible before April showers start to roll in.
