Summer is gone, long gone. Cold winds and icy mornings announce the inevitable arrival of winter. Just as our lifestyle changes with the seasons, so should our homes. It’s about time to bring out your winter woollies as this is the beginning of those cozy nights in.shutterstock_519654244

  1. Window coverings

As much as we’d love those sheer curtains, they’re bad at keeping the heat in and the cold out. Instead, invest in some layered or insulated curtains or roller blinds. If you really, really have to go through winter with those sheers, pay a visit to the hardware store (or online) and pick up window insulation kits.

  1. New heater?

Since we’re talking about the dropping temperatures outside, it’s high time we brought up the heater option. You don’t know which type is best for you? The best way to determine this is to think about how often will you be using it and how big is the space you’re planning on heating:

  • Electric heaters—are cheap and portable, just perfect for renters who live in small to medium-sized spaces that don’t need it to be on for long periods.
  • Gas heaters—are better for larger spaces that require to be left on for longer periods of time.
  • Reverse-cycle air conditioners—are the costliest option, but might be worth it in the long run as they are fairly economical for the heat they generate.
  1. Rugs and carpets

Tiles, hardwood or concrete floors need some attention in the cold season and the most effective way to cozy-up your home during this time is to cover them with rugs. Hardwood floors are not only cold underfoot in winter, they don’t hold in any heat either, so unless you have underfloor heating, acquire some rugs this season.

  1. Update your duvets

Wool and feather quilts are typically the best options for those of us looking for plenty of warmth, while cotton and microfiber quilts provide lighter insulation.

  1. Layers of texture

Knitted throws, plush velvet, hints of timber or brass will materialize your redecoration habits in no time. Even just some new cushions can make a big difference when your intention is to create a warm, snuggly space.

  1. Color palette

Summer is all about light and bright colors, but now it’s time to put those aside until 2018. Opt for warming hues like terracotta, chocolate brown, golden yellow and burnt orange to visually bring some extra warmth to your home.

  1. Fireplace

If you’re lucky enough to have this amenity in your home, now is the time to stock up on firewood. Also, talk to your landlord to have a professional come and do a routine check so that everything is clean and functioning properly before you start using it.

  1. Renter’s insurance

Cold weather can cause damage to your home’s pipes. A burst pipe means serious damage, not only to the structure of the home, but also to your belongings. With renter’s insurance you stay protected against unfortunate events that might occur such as fire, smoke, water damage, windstorms, lightning, theft and vandalism.
