Grilling and Chilling

Long summer days call for fun in the sun and some good BBQ grilling time. Let’s explore some tasty summer recipes while also remembering to practice safety first!

As a responsible renter, you know that ResidentShield renter’s insurance provides a safety net in case of accidental fire mishaps. However, it’s of utmost importance that you play your part by ensuring all smoke alarms are in working order. Check with your property management about the last sprinkler system inspection. Remember, never leave food unattended; always turn off the stove and grill when you’re done. And don’t forget to keep your furry friends safe with collars and updated tags, especially during the hustle and bustle of BBQs.

Grill Gadgets. Before firing up the grill, review various grilling gadgets, tools and accessories that can enhance the BBQ experience. Silicone basting brushes are heat resistant, and the bristles hold sauces in place so they don’t drip all over the grill or ground before making it to the proteins. For kebab grillers, step outside the box with kebab grilling skewers and baskets. Thus preventing veggies from getting over-charred and protecting food from direct heat and flames or falling into the grill. Get techy and try a wireless meat thermometer to take your grilling skills to the next level. That way, you can check your meat thermometer on your phone while in the pool. Win, win!

Now, let’s get to the fun part—recipes! Summer is all about taking it easy, and what better way to embrace the season than by firing up the grill and cooking outside? Whether you’re grilling up some Saturday breakfast tacos, mouthwatering mains for a weekend dinner, or appetizers for a cookout, the smoky flavors and perfect char of food that have come off the grill are unmatched!

Meats, meats, meats. Most will stick with the basic known recipes such as ribs, steaks, kebabs, hot dogs and burgers, but adding more flavors to these can enhance the meat’s natural flavors. Try an international day and embrace recipes such as Brazilian churrasco, Korean BBQ or Mediterranean kebabs. Explore various marinades and rubs for different types of meat and poultry.

Vegan & vegetarian. Outdoor grilling doesn’t just have to be meat. Vegan and vegetarian recipes outside with a nice smoky flavor and char are just as scrumptious. Grill up a French dish like ratatouille with charred summer vegetables dressed in olive oil, fresh herbs and garlic. Grilled Zucchini with lemon salt is a game-changer since it is so bright and fresh. Fresh corn on the cob is always a crowd-pleaser, but try various seasonings and flavored butter on it for a twist, like Mexican street corn. Mushrooms are amazing grilled, especially portabella mushrooms. Marinade them the night before. Grilled eggplant and asparagus napoleons are a spectacular side dish layered with creamy ricotta, Italian cheeses and tender grilled asparagus.

Deliciously sweet. Step outside the box of S’mores and grill up some peaches or pineapples for dessert. Grilling both fruits caramelizes the sugars. Cut peaches in half, then stuff them with some vanilla ice cream or crème fraîche topped with a dusting of cinnamon sugar and a drizzle of caramel or honey. Add grilled pineapple slices to vanilla mascarpone, chocolate-hazelnut spread and toasted hazelnuts.

Thirst-quenching libations. A good grill master must have a refreshing beverage to keep them cool! Enjoy various drinks complementing grilled dishes like watermelon mojitos, peach sangrias or lemonade variations. Lavender lemonade with vodka or gin is a summer solstice favorite. Just remember you are keeping hydrated in between with water while being in the hot sun. Get the kids involved and make mocktails using various sparkling flavored waters and juices.

Happy Grilling!
