Cozy, Warm and Welcoming: Hygge Home Ideas

Hygge (pronounced Hoo-gah) is a Danish word that describes a cozy, contented mood evoked by comfort and togetherness.  Hygge has exploded in popularity worldwide and perhaps explains why the Danes are some of the happiest people in the world! In essence, Hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people.

Let’s delve into how you can create Hygge inspiration in your personal life and, if you are a property manager or owner, how you can create hygge inspiration around the property.

Cozy Common Areas. Let’s begin with creating a hygge-inspired DIY décor. If the building has a common area with a fireplace, transform the shared space with a fireplace makeover. Many budget-friendly options include repainting the mantel, adding decorative tiles, or incorporating a faux stone façade to create a warm and inviting communal space. Create warm and welcoming entryways with creative seasonal décor. DIY custom wreaths, incorporate seasonal artwork or install cozy seating areas. Hygge-inspired lounge spaces create comfort for residents.

Showcase elements like soft blankets, plush pillows and warm lighting to foster hygge-inspired ambiance in shared lounge spaces, encouraging residents to relax and unwind during the last cold month of winter. Candles are the best for creating that warm and cozy feeling. Buy some scents for the time of year, such as vanilla, lavender, bergamot, oakmoss, and neroli. If the budget allows it, set up a teatime in the afternoons with various herbal teas, coffees, and fresh cookies. Schedule a happy hour with mulled wine one evening before spring comes and invite residents to unwind with their favorite book or set up some board games by the fireplace for fun.

Don’t think that Hygge is just a winter thing. Hygge spring/summer is not that much different because the focus is still on togetherness. Enjoy an outside BBQ Day with residents. Include some of the summertime favorites, such as S’mores, and have an outside firepit lit or a bonfire to roast them on. If located close to a park or beach, picnic with wine, summer berries and cupcakes. Biking is a great way to explore in the summertime.

Check out new places to eat and get some good exercise, all while sharing the pleasure of the moment with friends or family. Outdoor movie nights are plentiful in the warmer months, with popcorn, cozy blankets and plenty of fairy twinkle lights or lanterns around the trees or bushes to set the Hygge mood.

Hygge Challenge. Create a daily Hygge-inspired schedule.

  • Monday: Cook dinner while listening to music and eating by candlelight.
  • Tuesday: Buy some fresh flowers or a plant to bring nature indoors.
  • Wednesday: Have a screen-free evening. Read a book or have a family game night.
  • Thursday: Get creative by baking, writing or doing arts and crafts.
  • Friday: Get cozy with friends and family with plenty of blankets, music and comfort food.
  • Weekend: Spend some time in nature. Go for a long walk, hike or explore your neighborhood.

Hygge is all about what makes you feel happy and content. Find things you love around the home and take a few extra moments of mindfulness to appreciate them.
