Moving season is here and got us thinking about pet-friendly advice for traveling and moving with your pets. Whether you have dogs, cats, or parrots, they will probably feel some emotions while tensions are high around the home. Animals can sense their owner’s uneasy emotions, which will also trigger them to worry. Here are some tips to make your pets feel as comfortable as possible while packing up and moving.
During the packing process, if you can go to the new location prior, bring along your pet so they can familiarize themselves there. Bring some of their toys or bedding and let them get acquainted with the new place. Cats love to explore, so keep an eye on them if they find a new hiding spot you have yet to become familiar with. Once you begin packing, animals will start being concerned about why you are packing everything. Make sure you take time for them and reassure them that everything will be okay. Dogs would appreciate extra scratches and play time if you can go to a park. If your dog is extra sensitive to the packing process, Chewy and other pet shopping sites offer calming treats, some with CBD that is good for relaxation and anxiety.
Cats will notice everything too. They will sniff out each box and want to see what is happening. Cats love boxes, so be on the lookout if you find them inside one!
When moving day arrives, you will go in and out a lot with everything. Be sure your pets are microchipped and updated in case they run out. If you have a backyard or patio, have the pets out there so they are not in the way of the movers. Kennels or cat carriers will work as well. Chances are they will be upset when the movers come to take the furniture, so be sure you are close by, so they are not too upset. Keep some of their treats close by and give them extra attention and love.
If moving long distance, be sure your kennel or cat carrier will be secured. You do not want a cat getting out of it and clawing up the car while driving. Keep your pet hydrated with plenty enough water. Consider the temperature and keep good air circulation around the kitty carrier. Be sure you are taking breaks. Dogs are typically good in the car and will go when you need a bathroom break. Keep them leashed, so they do not take off, and bring a cat harness so they can stretch their paws a bit. If traveling with birds, such as a parrot, be sure they are secure. Tranquilizers can help if your pet is used to them. We do not recommend trying them out the first time while moving across the country. Some cats may freak out and have incessant whining in the car. Between a cat’s cry and a bird’s squawk, you’ll be sure to be crazy by the time you reach your final destination. Remember to relax and breathe.
Once arriving at the new location, ensure your pets are secure again. They will want to be checking everything out again, and hopefully, by that point, you will be able to have them know the place so they will feel more at ease. Unpacking is the fun part, but try to be again attentive to the pets. Again, try to keep to a familiar routine to have them feel secure and safe.
